Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed taking part in various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
