Pai Gow is played with 53 cards; the customary 52-card basic deck and a single joker. The player is given seven cards faces showing and the casino gets seven cards faces hidden.

One five card hand and one 2 card hand need to be made from the seven cards dealt, the five card hand must be higher than the 2 card hand. To succeed, a player needs both of his hand totals to be better than the casino’s.
