Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked participating in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lose most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on poker.

The actual improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often play against one another. He had access into some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
