Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching the age of one. His papa taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to learn whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the adverse feedback from others destroy his ambition of being one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

He began playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and an eternal love for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every day and is quite humble about his achievements. Phil admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and always strives to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
