Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.

The real improvement in his abilities happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently wager against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
