Poker Face

Do you ever acquire that itch? The itch to bet, to head to the closest gambling establishment, to locate a good stakes game of Texas holdem, to sit at a Chemin de fer table for hours on end. I love that itch. And I like to scratch it.

I also like to watch folks bet. No two poker faces seem identical. When I bet I like to feel I put on a poker face which is impenetrable. But I know I’ve certain mannerisms. For one, the only time I smoke is when I play poker or Twenty-one. And then I smoke. But I chain smoke no matter if I am succeeding or losing, whether or not I’ve a great hand or bad.

I once wagered inside a weekly poker game. The game was often five card draw. There was a man who wagered with us every week who always wore a hat. When he was given a very good hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and betting with his hat. Needless to say, he by no means won.

The very best poker player I ever saw was a man who manufactured a lot more actions and signals at a poker table than anybody I had ever seen. He was impeccable in the way he dressed. Usually an high-priced suit and tie, boots shined and nails manicured. He was fastidious in this manner. And he was usually brushing his pants or rubbings his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.

I use to study him for hours on end. I would tried to see if I could spot his tell. Picking fuzz off his shirt- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a very short pile – did this imply he had a good hand?

Many years later I bumped into him within a bar in Chi town and we had a beverage. I asked him if he have been aware of all those movements he created or if they had been subconscious. He told me that every single individual thing he did at a poker table was intentional. He said that everybody is often checking out everybody else’s poker face. They’re attempting to notice the the tell.

So his method was to give them lots to believe about. His reasoning was if they were thinking about him picking a piece of fuzz off his vest and what it meant they sure weren’t thinking about their cards.

His method was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a system that works for you.
